A vernier caliper measures length more precisely than a plain ruler by using two scales: a fixed main scale, and a sliding vernier scale whose divisions are very slightly smaller than the main scale's. The main scale gives a rough reading, and whichever vernier division lines up exactly with a main scale division gives a small, precise correction.
