Simple Explanation

An exponent tells you how many times to multiply a number (the base) by itself. In aⁿ, a is the base and n is the exponent (or power): a is used as a factor n times, so aⁿ = a Γ— a Γ— a Γ— ... Γ— a (n factors).

Why Do We Need It?

Exponents are shorthand for repeated multiplication, the same way multiplication is shorthand for repeated addition β€” without it, writing "2 multiplied by itself 20 times" would take a full line instead of just 2²⁰.
