The nucleus is the control centre of a eukaryotic cell. It is a membrane-bound structure that stores the cell's genetic material (DNA) and directs the cell's activities, including growth and reproduction.
Why Do We Need It?
Because the nucleus holds the instructions (DNA) for building and running the whole cell, it effectively controls everything else the cell does.

Why Does This Work?
Because DNA contains the instructions for every protein the cell needs, removing the nucleus cuts the cell off from its own instruction manual β it can keep running briefly on existing proteins, but can't replace them or divide.

Mature human red blood cells have no nucleus, unlike almost every other cell in the body.
Because they lack a nucleus, red blood cells can't repair themselves or divide β which is why the body has to replace them roughly every 120 days.
