Revise: Motion

Vectors and scalars, distance, displacement, speed, velocity and acceleration, the four equations of motion, free fall, and distance-time and velocity-time graphs β€” all worked through step by step.

Vectors and Scalars

Scalars: size only. Vectors: size AND direction.

6 m/s east + 2 m/s west β†’ 4 m/s east.

Distance and Displacement

Distance = total path length. Displacement = straight-line, with direction.

One lap of a track: distance 400 m, displacement 0 m.

Speed

speed = distance / time

150 m in 30 s β†’ 5 m/s.

Acceleration

a = (v βˆ’ u) / t

10β†’30 m/s in 5 s β†’ 4 m/sΒ².

The First Equation of Motion (v = u + at)

v = u + at

u=5, a=3, t=4 β†’ v=17 m/s.

Free Fall

g β‰ˆ 9.8 m/sΒ² for every object near Earth.

Dropped for 2 s β†’ falls 19.6 m.
